"Symphonic Variations No. 1" (known in earlier version as "Variations in C Major") was developed from my original theme-cadence for piano created while still in the middle school.
First variations from that theme, all using 4-voice sketches only, were developed starting in the fall of 1986, and the last variation in that original set being the Variation No. 10 - completed by Dec. 8 of that year. As time progressed, however, during the next few weeks new variations were added, and Part One concluded with Variation No. 14 and final code by Jan. 19, 1987.
Creation of Part 2 progressed in somehow slower pace during the remaining part of 1987, and in not exactly numerical order, finishing whole cycle with Variation No. 21 in Nov. 1987. It is worth mentioning that although whole sketch was written in 4-voice form and for piano solo, using very liberal distances between these voices suggested however from start using larger ensemble rather than piano for one player. But orchestration (arranged for symphonic orchestra) was not done until Nov. 2011.
The cycle starts with a harmonic short theme (6 measures long), immediately varied and morphed using its progression and elements to develop new short motives which will be successively used later on, evolving in various forms and shapes, creating progressively longer and longer variations, sometimes titled, sometimes not, including three parts "Minuet" (var. 5, 6, 7), "Gallop" (var. 8), "Passacaglia" (var. 12), "Fugato" (var. 13).
In Part 2 we have such enlarged movements as "Passacaglia Aria" (var. 16), "Elegy" (var. 17), "Scherzo" (var. 18), "Threnody" (var. 19), "Fugue" (var. 20), and "Finale-coda" (var. 21). |
