Description
Symphonic Variations No. 2 (originally called "Variations in D Major") were created in one week period starting on February 25, 1987, but orchestration was completed in August 2011.

A simple, partially pentatonic melody opens it, being introduced in top register of flute and piccolo, and then in contrast repeated simultaneously in lowest register of double basses and tuba solo. Full section strings repeats it next, within also introducing a fragment of the main theme which in full is shown soon by the first violins and clarinet solo accompanied by cello solo. After reminiscence of initial pentatonic melody in its canonic variations, it is this main theme which takes over, repeated in glorious fortissimo by of the whole orchestra, then being always present in various variations as in the background almost in every succeeding variation, though pentatonic melody has its metamorphosis in various arrangements. Before the end the main theme returns in triumph once more in even larger and overwhelming tutti and then descends into short coda which ends the piece.

It is worth to note that during composition process in one internal variation, in the counterpoint, quite naturally and unexpectedly emerged the first few notes of the American Anthem, and even more explicit than it remains so in the final version. Few note quotation was sufficient for my purpose, however, and I dropped an idea to pursue it any further (though it was still quite possible).
